Confined Space Health Assessments

Workplace health and safety legislation demands that health and safety issues are managed this includes fitness for duty in particular environments such as confined spaces. The definition of confined space applies to any space that is not designed for continuous human occupancy that has limited means of access by way of entry or exit. Employers are required by legislation to ensure their employees are fit to work in and are able to exit the spaces safely should the need arise.

Exit Health Assessment

An exit health assessment provides and documents details on an individual employee’s health status at the time they leave an organisation. An exit assessment can assist organisations Workers Compensation claims lodged by former employees against a former employer.

Fitness to drive Assessment

Different categories of employees are required by law to hold a Commercial Vehicle/Dangerous Goods driver’s license. Commercial vehicle driver health standards are more stringent than the private standards and reflect the increased risk associated with motor vehicle accidents involving commercial vehicles.

Austroads has recently revised its guidelines, Assessing Fitness to Drive to outline commercial vehicle driver medical standards.

Employees who are subjected to a Fitness to Drive examination include the following:

  • cab driver
  • truck driver
  • driver in rental service
  • ambulance driver
  • instructor of a driving school
  • paid student transport

When making appointments, please state clearly that a fitness to drive test must be carried out. The Consultant Occupational physician will communicate the results to the employer and the employee by means of the health assessment form.
